Wine Regions of North & South America
The US has taken a melting pot of European grape varietals and given them their own American twist. The most popular and best known is California with its native Zinfandel grape, but there are also some excellent Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Merlot and other wines being made, not only in California, but in other states such as Oregon, Washington, and New York.
North of the border, Canada also produces some stunning wines, predominantly in Southern Ontario and the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia. The highlight is their icewine, a lusciously sweet dessert wine made from Riesling, Vidal or occasionally, Cabernet Franc grapes.
There are several wine regions in South America, each with their own flavour and style of wine. Chile and Argentina are the leaders in the field, best known for the soft, lush, inky-black Malbec or the aromatic, peach-scented Torrontés.
